Sertraline: Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

Sertraline is a commonly prescribed medication belonging to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It’s primarily used to treat conditions like depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. It helps by restoring the balance of serotonin in the brain, which affects mood and emotions.

What is Sertraline used for?

Sertraline is prescribed for several mental health conditions due to its ability to regulate serotonin levels in the brain.

Here are the conditions it’s most often used to treat:

Depression: Sertraline helps reduce symptoms of depression by increasing serotonin levels

Anxiety disorders: Sertraline is effective in treating various anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (social phobia), and panic disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Sertraline helps reduce obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Sertraline can reduce PTSD symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance

How much should I take?

The usual dose for adults taking sertraline is 50mg. However, if you have issues with your liver, your doctor may start you on a lower dose and then gradually increase your dosage to allow your body to get used to the medication.

You should always follow your doctor’s instructions when it comes to taking your sertraline.

If you forget to take a dose, never take two the next day to make up for it. Simply take your dose as normal, and if you regularly forget to take your medication, try setting a medicine alarm to remind you so that you get the full benefit of your sertraline.

What are the side effects?

Sertraline, like all medications, can cause side effects. While many people tolerate it well, some may experience mild to moderate side effects. It’s important to be aware of these potential effects and discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Common side effects of sertraline can include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Problems sleeping
  • Reduced sex drive, ability to orgasm & erectile dysfunction
  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
